Online Volunteering: Volunteering without the commute
by Karen Lovett

When you think of volunteering, you may think of helping out at church, school, or civic organization. You know where you have to go and actually do physical work. You do tasks like reading to kids, dishing out food, helping clean up a disaster area, or maybe just delivering food to shut-ins. But there is a totally different type of volunteering out there today.

Due to the wonderful experience of living in a computer age, we have the option of volunteering without ever having to leave home. No, it isn’t phone solicitation for your favorite charity. It isn’t even stuffing envelopes for them. It is the wonderful world of volunteering online.

You may wonder how anyone could benefit from this type of volunteering. But take a minute and think of the skills you have now, or would like to learn. Volunteering is a wonderful way of further developing the skills you have or achieving new ones.

You gain the increased knowledge or skill in performing a certain task, and the group you are volunteering for get the benefit of your help. And the beauty of it, is that you can do it from home, in your comfy robe and slippers if you feel like it.

It really isn’t that hard to find opportunities online. In fact, there is a web site devoted just to helping others find places to volunteer online. There you will find a listing of categories that is rather extensive and slightly overwhelming, if you just want to volunteer but don’t know what you would like to do.

Don’t worry, it isn’t that hard to find a volunteering position online that will suit your needs and still benefit others. First, you must stop and consider, why you want to volunteer. How much time you have that would be available for the volunteering project? What about a preference as to what you would like to do to volunteer?

For instance, if you love to talk to others, you may can find a volunteer position hosting chats on a topic that you enjoy. Not only will you be helping the other chatters with your special knowledge, but you will be learning a lot about yourself and the other chatters as well.

When I first started volunteering online, I was amazed at all that I thought I would never learn to do. It really seemed overwhelming. And since I have a knack for getting in over my head, I figured I had just done it again. But with time and patience, I learned that I really have a lot to contribute to others. So do you. You just have to take the time and patience to explore yourself and the volunteer opportunities that surround you.

So if helping out at a hospital, school, or organization in person, doesn’t fit into your schedule, check out the wonderful world of volunteering online. I can honestly say that it has truly blessed my life each and every day. Check out the links section for a link to a site that specializes in helping you find options for volunteering online.
