Tips for Volunteering Online as a Chat Host
by Karen Lovett

Volunteering as an online chat host isn’t as hard as it seems. You have to be willing to adhere to a schedule but then most of life involves a schedule of some sort, doesn’t it? And of course, you have to follow the guidelines that the site sets forth. We have to follow rules or laws in most things in our life also.

Each site usually has a slightly different set of guidelines, responsibilities, and requirements which must be met to be a chat host. The trick is to find a topic you are interested in enough to sit in a chat room and either discuss or listen to it be discussed, depending on the responsibilities of a chat host at that particular web site.

Some require that you have been a member of that particular community or web service provider for a certain length of time. Some look for experience in hosting chats, while others prefer experience in the topic that you will be hosting. One thing that most all have in common is a series of training and reports that they have set up for all chat hosts to follow.

Now, before you start freaking and thinking sit down at school with teachers grading you, they are usually more casual and laid back. Many are done online and through chats. They are designed as a learning experience, not as a test of your current knowledge.

You generally aren’t expected to know everything about hosting a chat going into it.

But there are a few things that you can do that will make it easier on you. Spend some time in the chat room or similar chat rooms that you will be hosting in. Get to know the hot topics, the members, and the general trends of conversation. Go in at different times of day and night and compare the different type of chatters there and the topics that they prefer to discuss.

Make you a list of questions that you can ask the room that go with your topic to get conversation started if it starts slacking off. Also a list of welcome to the room greets are nice to have handy. Then you copy them and just paste them into the room to greet new arrivals or to stimulate a slow chat.

Some of the sites will have tools that you can use to greet and manage the chat. They sometimes take a little getting used to but you will also find that they really are a help if used correctly. But it is always wise to have a backup of copy and paste text to use in case the tools fail to work properly. And as usual, they will sometimes fail.

But the most important thing in a chat host position is knowing what you are required to do. For some sites, you will be expected to be an expert in a field and to help answer questions during the chat. Other sites, only require you to greet the new arrivals and be familiar with the area and software. Still others have the tasks so broken down that you may only be there simply to greet.

Facilitating the chat is one of the most important things a chat host can do. If the site doesn’t have their own requirements higher than this standard, then don’t try to answer all the questions, but instead facilitate the chat.

Greet the new arrivals as they enter the chat room. Help guide them toward the current topic and make them feel welcome. Be aware of who in the room are more familiar with which aspects of your topic. If a question comes up that you know a chatter is familiar with, ask them to help answer the question. If you aren’t sure if anyone is familiar, ask. There truly are no stupid questions. Don’t be afraid to admit that you don’t have all the answers. You are only human.

You may find yourself getting caught up in the online life you have created and taking complaints and rude comments personally. Don’t let that happen. The trick to that is to remember that these people, for the most part, don’t know you personally. They know the you that they have formed in their imagination. They picture you in a certain way and it may be as far from the truth of who you are as a beggar is from being a billionaire.

Remember that you volunteered for the fun of it. Don’t let any petty or snide remarks interfere with the fun. And although you have to take your responsibility seriously and uphold your end of the agreement with the web site, don’t let it control your entire life. There is life outside of your computer screen.

Chat hosting is fun. You get to meet new people and learn new things. Most sites will try to work around what time you have available, but they also have fairly strict requirements on time and reports. Do the best of your ability to meet those requirements. Keep the fun in the chatting experience. And remember that it is only a virtual world and don’t let it control your real life. You will do fine and have some fun in the process. So relax, kick back, grab a fresh drink, and chat away.
