One day a friend of mine sent me a message that they enjoyed reading the article about the woman making crochet blankets for babies in need. She then went on to explain how the article had given her the idea to make them out of cloth for needy babies in her area. This naturally led her to making lap blankets for elderly residents of a local nursing home.
Then a few weeks later, she told me that now she was working on a new project for the nursing home residents. Of course, I had to ask what and boy was I ever surprised at her answer. Her family is making wall décor for the residents to hang in their room. To her this progression along the path of giving was quite natural. She has a kind heart and is always extending her hand to those in need.
The progress from one project to another intrigued me. How does one flow so naturally from making baby blankets to wall hangings for nursing home residents. Well of course, I asked her. Her reply really wasn’t that much of a surprise though. When she saw the article about the crochet baby blankets, she wanted to do something similar.
Her problem was that she did not crochet. So she thought about the things that she does do and how she could use the skills she has. It just so happens that she is very skilled at sewing. She just took that skill and adapted the volunteering idea she has seen to fit her on unique abilities. Instead of crocheting blankets, she sewed them.
However, she didn’t stop there. Sure babies need warmth and love but so do other people. When I asked what her inspiration was for choosing to make blankets and donate to a local nursing home, she said that her parents loved to receive things that she made.
Sounds simple doesn’t it. Well this wonderful woman has so much going on in her personal life, that honestly, I’m surprised she has time to sleep. Regardless of the tons of things that would be enough of a hindrance to deter most individuals, her children and her all go the extra mile in making these gifts from their hearts to share with others. Each week, they gather their treasures, which they have so lovingly made and deliver them to the local nursing home.
She isn’t a leader of a group that is doing this as a special project. Her family is simply giving what they feel led to give out of the kindness of their hearts. She had the desire to help and she acted on it by determining what she had to offer and where it would best fit in to help others. I’m proud to call this special woman my friend.
