Make a Difference with a Letter
by Karen Lovett

Could you write a letter or send a card once a week? It doesn’t take much time or money. It isn’t difficult to do. It can mean the world to a man or women serving in the armed forces that are away from their families for extended lengths of time.

These young men and women don’t get to go home each night to their loved ones. Daily contact with family and friends may not even be possible for any number of reasons. The need for human contact and to know that someone cares is still there. Sure they make friends with others in their group, but news from home can definitely brighten their day.

It doesn’t even have to be there home that they hear news from. It could be your home. You could brighten the days of a service man or women just by sending a letter or a small care package on a regular basis. If you have ever traveled for business or went to camp, I’m sure you will understand how important having even the occasional words of kindness can uplift your spirits.

Don’t worry if you don’t know anyone that is in service. Many would really enjoy hearing from someone and having the opportunity to make a new friend. If you are looking for someone to date, I do not recommend this as a method of meeting that man or woman of your dreams. However, if you are looking for a way to make a difference in another individual’s life or to have an opportunity to make a new friend, then this may be just what you need.

There are even several online sites that really help to make it a lot easier for you to find a service person that are away from home, family, and friends. One web site hosts an adopt a platoon program. They have the basic requirements of what each person, group, or business that adopts a platoon would need to do published on their web site. If you go to www.adoptaplatoon.org, you will find more information on this program.

A very similar program can be found at www.adoptasoldier.org. This program is not just a holiday time program but strives to promote supporting military personnel throughout the year. Even a brief letter from a complete stranger can let them know that what they are doing is appreciated.

Another wonderful web site with information and tips on how we can show our service men and women that they are thought of is www.opsos.org. This web site’s title says it all. SOS Support our soldier. You can’t get much more direct than that. This site is especially interesting in that it allows you to send a free letter. You can’t get much more inexpensive than that. The site allows you to write an eletter which they then print off and send out in batches of 100. You can send a note of thanks for all you do without having to even give out your address if you prefer to not have a reply.

As you can see, these web sites offer you several different opportunities to show the men and women of the armed forces that you are behind them and that you appreciate all that they do. You can help make a difference in their day to day lives by reminding them that they are special and that someone does care. All it takes is the desire to extend your hand to another and a little time and maybe even a few stamps.
